David Stafford once wrote that in the early days of Genesis 3D development they DISABLED 32-bit rendering support due to 'current' graphics hardware weaknesses.
Game developers have to think in future terms of graphics hardware if they are doing 3D graphics stuff. And so did Eclipse Software when they gave us the priviledge to modify the engine. The only thing we have to do is to give the mods to our community, so they are available to everyone.
The idea of OpenSource is to bring innovation, reusability and communication into software development. So why don't we bring the pieces all together... We should put all our knowledge together and build ALOT of different drivers for G3D.
Think of a steadily enhanced graphics engine with a whole lot of optional features like z-buffering, anti-aliasing, 32-bit support, better mip-mapping, distance fogging...and how about an OpenGL one...
Lots of game programmers simply use the Genesis 3D 1.0 engine without any modifications and are happy with it. But how happy could they are, if they could get it ALL without changing a line in their own gamecode. Therefore i build this site up to develop a system for CHOOSING THE RIGHT DRIVER that meets the requirements of your game and the future game players.
I think of a configuration tool where the player can choose the the wanted graphics features and game engine is spawned with the perfect driver. I will develop it in Delphi. It will be easily customizable (without programming), comfortable, good looking, OpenSource and completely FREE...
It would be possible to turn on all driver features your hardware is capable of and to turn off all it isn't! So you can reach a much greater bandwith of computer players with different hardware and they will THANK YOU... it can be so simple to be a good guy...
